What is vibe coding — and when is it not enough for business software?

Updated:

Vibe coding is building software by describing what you want to an AI in plain language and accepting the code it writes, without reading it line by line. It is a fast way to try an idea. For software a business depends on, the rules nobody asked about, the checks and the maintenance still have to come from somewhere.

Where does the term come from?

It was coined by Andrej Karpathy in February 2025, and Collins Dictionary named it its word of the year for 2025.

Karpathy described giving in to the flow: you ask, the AI writes, you run it, and you forget that the code even exists. The phrase spread far beyond programmers, because it named something many people were already doing with AI chat tools and app builders.

What is vibe coding good for?

Trying an idea in an afternoon, a personal tool, a demo for a meeting, learning how an application is put together.

When the cost of a mistake is small, speed is what matters. You see the idea working, you show it to someone, you learn what you really want. Many good products start as a quick prototype.

It is also a good way to discover your own requirements: the first version shows you the questions you had not thought of.

Where does it fall short for a business?

Where the software holds rules, money, other people’s data or someone’s daily work. What the prompt did not say is guessed, and nobody checks the guess.

A repair is one day late: does the customer get a message? Two patients ask for the same slot: who gets it? The last item is in two baskets: who pays for it? A prompt rarely says, so the AI picks an answer — and it may pick a different one next time.

Then come the questions a prototype skips: who may see what, what happens to the data, how the next change is made without breaking the last one, and who notices when it does break. A demo can live without answers. A business cannot.

What do you need beyond the prompt?

Questions before building, a written plan you approve, a check by someone other than the builder, repairs that are checked again, hosting, and a record of every decision.

None of this means writing code. It means that the person who knows the business answers the questions that only they can answer, and that the work is checked against those answers — not against the builder’s own opinion of it.

The record matters most at the second and third change: the next person, or the next AI, reads why things are the way they are instead of guessing again.

Is vibe coding bad, then?

No. It is the right tool for some jobs. The mistake is to treat a prototype as a product.

Use it to explore. When the idea becomes something people rely on, give it the process a product needs.

Where does CodeHero fit?

CodeHero keeps the plain language and adds the production line: an interview, a written plan, building, an independent check by a different AI company, repair, hosting and maintenance.

You describe the work and decide the rules; you do not write code. The factory asks what is missing before it builds, has every important rule checked from the screen to the database and back, and keeps the decisions with your project, on your own computer or server.

How does CodeHero compare with other AI coding tools?

It is a different kind of thing. Coding tools help a person who writes code. CodeHero does the whole job — asks, plans, builds, checks, hosts and maintains — for the person who knows the business. Read the article

If CodeHero writes the code, what is my role?

You become the advisor: you decide the business rules, approve the plan and accept the result. CodeHero is the developer that asks, builds, checks and maintains. Read the article

Do my passwords and keys reach the AI company?

Not the ones you store as secrets (eight characters or longer): your application uses them, but their values are not sent to the AI service. A password typed into a chat message or shown in a screenshot cannot be recognised — store every password as a secret. Read the article
